As human beings are intelligent species they are making their day-to-day life easy, actually easier than it is required. And here is a new product of human intelligence in the market i.e."Tesla's autopilot cars".Yes! Unbelievable ! Isn't it? Now I just want a time travelling machine so that I can go back in time and record some crazy reaction of people after telling them "Hey! We have self-driving cars ! ".
The Difference Between Google's Self-Driving Cars And Tesla's Autopilot System
Google's self-driving cars
Google's system uses 64-beam LIDAR technology. LIDAR stands for Light Detection And Ranging. It is incredibly precise and expensive.Sources say that the Google's robotic cars have about $150,000 equipment including $70,000 only for LIDAR. This technology allows the vehicle to generate a detailed 3D map of its environment. The car then takes this map and combines them with high-resolution maps to create various data models. These data models created then allows the car to drive itself.
Google's self-driving cars are very accurate and intelligent.Lets take an example to understand this.We face lots of scenarios while driving a car lets say lane blockage or big vehicles like a truck in front of our vehicle or parked on the side of the road.Because of the built in sensors, car itself detects such obstacles and keeps a safe distance from them also slows down the car.Unlike Tesla's autopilot system Google cars can localize themselves on the map.
Here is the image of actual 3D model created by the cars system of the above-mentioned scenario. In the picture, we can see that car recognizes the sign of lane blockage and changes the path accordingly.

Now what if there is a cyclist in your way? Google also have solution for that.Car recognizes the hand signal of the cyclist and slows down the car.In this case cyclist is giving the signal that he wants to go left by extending his left hand.

Handling 10% of the tough road situations is about hard work.Since Google has been working on the project for years, they already have 90% of the solution of various driving situations. This will be the major and potential advantage of the Google over other competitors.
Tesla's Autopilot
This is currently a hot topic in the automobile industry.Tesla's Model S includes autopilot system. The new software update for the model S i.e. software version 7.0 allows a car to use cameras, different ultrasonic sensors, radar in combination to automatically steer the vehicle down the highway. It also checks lanes, controls the speed according to the traffic..The Autopilot system consist of total 4 different systems.
- The first is forward looking radar, next is a camera with image recognition,a 360-degree long-range ultrasonic sonar and navigation and GPS.A forward looking radar scans the car in front of you and it is quite a long range. So it'll be able to see the things in most of the situations like through fog, smoke etc.
- Second is a camera with image recognition ability.Camera is able to read and recognize the stop sign, distinguish pedestrian, different states of traffic lights
- 360-degree long-range Ultrasonic sonar. This basically establishes the cocoon around the vehicle (protective covering). The best thing about ultrasonic radar is that they are very fast and can identify soft objects like a child or a dog. They can be operated at all speed like 0 miles per hour or 155 miles per hour.It can also recognize if there is a car in your blind-spot, highway barrier or anything that move into your way possible.
- Navigation and GPS system is used to detect real-time traffic and navigation towards the destination(directions).
Here are some features of Tesla Autopilot
Autosteer
Autosteer keeps the car in the current lane and use traffic awareness cruise controls to maintain the speed.Driver must keep their hand on the steering wheel.
Auto-lane change

Its very simple to use.Just engage the turn signal and then the car will automatically change the lane when it is safe to do so.
Automatic Emergency Steering and Side Collision Warning

Sense the objects around which are too close to the side of the car. When there is such a situation Model S alerts the driver by showing it on the instrument panel.
Autopark
Also, after arriving at the destination car scans for the parking space and parallel parks the vehicle, according to the users command. You need to drive at slow speed, then the symbol "p" will appear.Once activated then Autopark begins.
So this was little information about how autopilot or self-driving cars work.If you like it share it with your friends too!
